The Squadra Corse Angelo Caffi’s Dakar gets more complicated

11 januari 2022

A broken turbine on Luciano Carcheri and Giulia Maroni’s Nissan Terrano 1 ruined the Brescia-based team’s chances of a podium finish. The crew stopped in the Saudi Arabian desert but then heroically reached the bivouac. They will restart tomorrow.

Brescia, January 11th 2022 – Stage 10 changed the story of the Dakar Classic for the Squadra Corse Angelo Caffi. Luciano Carcheri and Giulia Maroni’s Nissan Terrano 1 unfortunately suffered a turbine failure that slowed the crew’s excellent pace in the early stages of today’s long day.

After the very fast first timed sector, Carcheri was recovering very well in the second section with a more stony track and a more technical development. Suddenly the turbine broke and the crew parked at the side of the track in the sun.

With great skill thanks to the experience accumulated in 10 participations in the most famous rally raid in the world, Carcheri intervened manually on the damaged part, making a makeshift repair that allowed him, after reaching the tarmac road, to continue slowly to the bivouac. Once they reached the service, TecnoSport technicians began a thorough examination of the damage, confirming that after the repair the #759 Nissan Terrano 1 will be able to continue racing tomorrow.

“After yesterday’s difficult stage we were in seventh place in Group H3, with a good chance of making a comeback. The Dakar is a jackpot, and this time it was our turn to pay the price, but in the end we are satisfied with what we have shown so far. I’m sorry for Giulia, who has always navigated with extreme precision and would have deserved a better result. We will continue, we never give up.

Next stage, January 12th | Wadi Ad Dawasir-Bisha
Four more regularity stages and one navigation stage over a total of 458 kilometres. It’s another fast stage, made tricky by the many intersections along the way.
