Some difficulties for the Squadra Corse Angelo Caffi in today’s stage between Al Dawadimi and Wadi Ad Dawasir. The very high average speed of almost 100km/h penalised the production-based cars such as the Nissan Terrano 1 driven by Luciano Carcheri and Giulia Maroni, who are continuing their Dakar Classic adventure.
Brescia, January 10th 2022 – Since the start of the 2022 Dakar Classic adventure, the eighth stage that has just ended was the most challenging so far for the Squadra Corse Angelo Caffi and its crew of Luciano Carcheri and Giulia Maroni in the #759 Nissan Terrano 1.
On the tracks between Al Dawadimi and Wadi Ad Dawasir, today’s stage proved to be one of the most selective with its 750 kilometres in total and very high imposed averages: the second sector had an average of 99.95km/h.
“We knew from the beginning that today would have been a stage of suffering for us. Our choice to line up in H3 at the beginning of the race was first of all a choice of pride and prestige. TecnoSport has worked hard to allow our Nissan Terrano 1 to be elevated in the highest performing group, but as production derived car and not born for competition, it cannot reach the top speeds of the ex-officials” Carcheri said.
“Apart from the last more technical part, where we really gave everything to limit the damage, in the two central competitive sectors it was all about speed. We pushed the car to the limit but I didn’t want to push it too hard because there are still four stages left and the mechanics could suffer. We lost a bit in the standings, but we will try to get back. Other crews congratulated us and this was certainly an act of great sportsmanship that underlined the performance of the whole team so far” Carcheri said.
The crew played a good stage anyway, but because of this the gap at the end Carcheri and Maroni lost some positions both in the overall and in the Group H3 classification, still being defined by the organisers.
