Dakar (Sen) – Brescia (ITA), January, 20th, 2020 – Alex Botturi wins 2020 Africa Eco Race. The rider from Brescia alongside the team “Squadra Corse Angelo Caffi”, riding the official 450 WRF Yamaha dominated the long and selective Monaco – Dakar competition covering more than 6500 km over 12 stages from 7th to 19th of January. With an outstanding win in the famous race on Sahara’s sands, the experienced rider from Brescia offers the team an extraordinary beginning of 2020. Botturi claimed his second consecutive victory on the Lac Rose in Senegal, northeast of Dakar in West Africa, after he took the win in the 2019 edition, also in the motorcycle category. The rider sealed the victory after Saturday 18th final stage, but celebrations on the podium for the winner took place today, Sunday 19th, after the special off chart stage, which finishes at the very Lac Rose.
Alex Botturi used all his experience and his great passion for the demanding race. He took and maintained the lead from the very scratch line in the opening stage in Morocco. Except for a 2nd place in the second of the 12 stages, Squadra Corse Angelo Caffi’s spearhead was in the lead all throughout the race, managing its advantage with care and precision, even in the most challenging moments and in the most difficult stages. It was a hard fought race and because of the high degree of competition everything was possible right to the very finish line, Botturi, however, was able to keep up expertly.
“It was a high-intensity race, but based on strategy – declared Botturi – a great teamwork, that has made up for the adversity of a long and selective race. I’d like to dedicate this win to Paulo Gonclaves as we were teammates. There have been some difficulties and I overcame some of them thanks to the sportiness of my rivals. At mid-race, when the navigation equipment became loose, I took advantage of a slowdown to solve the problem till the end stage. In the final part, we reduced the gap and the competitive spirit was high until the end” -.
