The Dakar Classic anticipates the start on December 31st
The Squadra Corse Angelo Caffi will face the first long road section to Ha’il to
inaugurate the 2022 desert marathon. First real stage of the race on New
Year’s Eve after the excellent test carried out by Carcheri-Maroni.
Brescia, December 30, 2021 – The last hours of waiting are over and then the Dakar
Classic 2022 for the Squadra Corse Angelo Caffi will finally get underway and Luciano
Carcheri and Giulia Maroni will have the first competitive feedback on the Nissan Terrano
1. With the last minute change of programme decided by the organisers, due to the high
number of participants that is close to 150, this year’s edition will get underway one day
earlier, on Friday December 31st.
The Nissan Terrano 1 prepared by TecnoSport and bearing the number #759 on the
doors will have to face the long road section from Jeddah to Ha’il. 838 kilometres to
reach the bivouac that will host the first three days. No competitive sectors but a
discreet proper appetizer before the real start of the race, scheduled for New Year’s Eve
with the stage Ha’il – Ha’il.
Luciano Carcheri will be behind the wheel. The italian will be at his 10th Dakar after the
surprising seventh overall and first in class H2.8 in the 2021 Classic edition. He will be
co-drived by 2021 Italian Cross-Country Rally Champion Giulia Maroni, making her debut
in the world’s most famous rally raid.
The crew undertook a test today in the sands around Jeddah with a short competitive
sector to check that all the onboard equipment was working and that the car was
technically ready.
“We are ready – said Carcheri on his return to the bivouac – the test went very well. The
first competitive stage, on January 1st, will be quite short in terms of kilometres, with
only 127 total kilometres and 22 in the competitive sector. Tomorrow there will be a long
transfer to Ha’il, which will be our base for the first two days of action until the Marathon
Stage scheduled for January srd and 4th”.
The next stage | January 1st | Ha’il-Ha’il
The co-drivers will be called upon to do a great job of orientation as the conformation of
this section does not help navigation. 54 kilometres of transfer followed by 22 kilometres
of competitive sector and another 50 kilometres to return to the bivouac. There will be a
bit of everything, including sand, but it is still too early to talk about dunes.
