Zeewolde, February 15, 2021 – Van Amersfoort Racing is happy to announce the signing of Lorenzo Fluxá. The Spaniard will once again race alongside teammate Francesco Pizzi, this time in the FIA certified Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine.
Lorenzo climbs the motorsports ladder at a high pace. Just like the majority of the greats in motor racing, the 16-year-old from Palma de Mallorca, started his racing career as a youngster in karting. In a short matter of time, Fluxá fought his way through a variety of karting categories, starting in national Cadet Series, moving all the way up to the FIA Karting OK World Championships.
Fluxá’s Formula 4 debut came at the beginning of 2020 in the form of the UAE F4 Championship. As will be the case in the upcoming FRECA season, both Lorenzo and Francesco Pizzi competed in that championship alongside each other as teammates. With seventeen top-5 finishes and eleven podiums, the Balearic claimed the UAE F4 Vice Championship with confidence.
To prepare for the upcoming Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine, Lorenzo currently competes in the Asian F3 series that alternates between the circuits of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The starting grid is filled with extensive experience coming from drivers who regularly compete in higher categories of formula racing. All the more a good environment to collect valuable experience and prepare for the new season.
Fluxá says: “I am extremely excited about the upcoming season. I enjoyed racing Formula 4 very much, but I feel I am ready to step up! In preparation of the FRECA season, I compete in the Asian F3 Championship. There I am surrounded by very talented drivers, which is not only motivating me, but also helps me to up my game!” Asking about the upcoming championship, Lorenzo explains: “Even though the specs are not the same, I get a good feel of the car by competing in the Asian F3. The car carries so much more speed and delivers so much more downforce than an F4 car and I feel very good about it! Also, if sharing two race weekends with F1 isn’t already exciting enough, we’ll be hitting the streets of Monaco for round 3 of the championship!”
The Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine is the result of a combined effort of the Formula Regional European Championship and the Formula Renault Eurocup. The merger between both series has strengthened the motorsport ladder and allows for drivers to seamlessly progress from Formula 4 to the next level in motor racing.
CEO of Van Amersfoort Racing, Rob Niessink says: “Lorenzo is on a fast-track. He only spent fairly little, yet successful time in Formula 4. The switch to Formula 3 is quite a major step. The track time he currently gathers in the Asian F3 series will therefore really help him to prepare for FRECA. Sure, the Asian F3 series uses a different engine and tyres, but it will help him to create a feel for specific F3 characteristics. Besides that, Lorenzo is very eager to move forward which is a great asset. He is a quick learner and is able to rapidly adapt to circumstances. The team is obviously excited to get started on this journey together with him!”
The 2021 season of the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine, which is certified by the FIA, contains 10 events holding 2 races each. The season kicks off towards the end of April at the famous circuit of Spa-Francorchamps. The next two rounds are joined events with Formula One; early May, the team visits Circuit de Barcelona for round two of the championship. For the next stop, which counts as one of the season’s highlights, the team shares the historical street circuit of Monaco with F1. The series then stays in France for the fourth round of the championship, scheduled at the end of May at the circuit of Paul Ricard. The fifth race event happens in the Dutch dunes of Zandvoort. Thereafter the team travels to Imola, the Nürburgring and the Red Bull Ring for respectively round six, seven and eight of the season. The last two events are hosted in Italy. The penultimate round of the championship takes place early October at Mugello, after which the team continues to the famous Monza circuit for the season finale.
