Valencia (E), April 15th, 2018. The 2018 season of Alex Caffi Motorsports starts well. In the first round of the 2018 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series, the USA-born championship starring cars with 5700 cc and 450 bhp Chevrolet engines, weight of 1,200 kg and rear-wheel drive, on the Spanish circuit of Valencia, the team’s drivers stood out with outstanding performances. Carmen Boix scored the first win amongst the ladies.
In élite 1 Borja Garcia’s weekend was a crescendo: after missing out by only four hundredths on a podium in the superpole, finishing fourth and improving the seventh position obtained in qualifying, on Saturday he ended race 1 in fifth position. Kenko Miura, after some problems in qualifying, did well and finished second in the challenge ranking. Sunday, in a race 2 characterized by different interventions of the safety car, Garcia fought back climbing up to third position, before finishing fifth due to an engine issue. His team-mate was not so lucky, and forced to stop in the final lap after a contact with another competitor.
In elite 2 Kenko Miura and Carmen Boix confirmed in the superpole their respective ninth and tenth place set in qualifying. In race 1, Saturday, Miura recovered positions finishing in fifth place, while Boix crossed the finish line eighteenth and third of the ladies’ classification. On Sunday Carmen Boix, after setting fastest best time in the warm-up, took her first victory amongst the ladies, finishing twelfth in front of her teammate, Miura, whom without a 25” penalty could have repeated saturday’s result close to the podium.
Among the elite club’s drivers, excellent performances came from both Jerome Francois on car number 1 and Andreas Kuchelbacher who set fifth fastest time with the Toyota Camry.
The next round of the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series will take place in a month, on May 18-20, on the Italian track of Franciacorta.
